He will be called Wonderful “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:6). When we study the names in the Bible, we see that they are used to describe certain traits in their owner. Jesus is called by many different names, and each name tells us something of his character. We well now look at one of his name, Wonderful. No one but Jesus deserves to be called wonderful. His whole life, from his birth to his death and resurrection, testifies that He is wonderful. Let us look at ten points that confirms this. 1. His conception and birth was a wonder Jesus is the only human ever to be conceived by the Holy Spirit. “This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant trough the Holy Spirit.” (Matthew 1:18). The fact that Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born by a virgin is quite remarkable. God almighty allowed himself to be born by a woman! Isaiah the prophet says, “Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.” (Isaiah 7:14). Immanuel means “God with us”. The time of Jesus' birth was predetermined, it was not chosen by coincidence. “But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law.” (Galatians 4:4). With these facts, we understand that his name could be nothing else than Wonderful. 2. His childhood was a wonder The Bible tells us that because of sins entrance to mankind, no man is able to live according to God’s standard of righteousness. “There is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God. All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one.” (Romans 3:11-12). However, this was not the case with Jesus. He says: “Can any of you prove me guilty of sin?” (John 8:46a). Throughout his childhood and adult life, he lived a life that pleased God. “And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.” (Luke 2:52). The fact that Jesus had favor with God shows us that from childhood he lived by faith. “But my righteous one will live by faith. And I take no pleasure in the one who shrinks back.” (Hebrews 10:38). 3. His obedience was a wonder Jesus' sole purpose was to live his life in obedience to his Father. He had no interests and needs other than to live in such a way. “With burn offerings and sin offerings you were not pleased. Then I said, “Here I am – It I written about me in the scroll- I have come to do your will, my God.”” (Hebrews 10:6-7). That kind of obedience comes with a high price, but the love of his Father made Jesus willingly pay it. ”Son though he was, he learned the obedience from what he suffered.” (Hebrews 5:8). 4. His teaching was a wonder Jesus did only what was pleasing to God. He did not teach his own words, but He taught the Word of God. “Jesus answered, “My teaching is not my own. It comes from the one who sent me. Anyone who chooses to do the will of God will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own. Whoever speaks on their own does so to gain personal glory, but he who seeks the glory of the one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him.” (John 7:16-18). When a man choose the obedience that Jesus chose it will always be recognized by the teachings and words he speaks. “When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.” (Matthew 7:28-29). The scribes learned and spoke from their tradition and their own interests. Jesus, however, spoke words from heaven, and his speech was outstanding. “No one ever spoke the way this man does,” the guards replied.” (John 7:46). 5. His acts were a wonder After Jesus was taken up into heaven, He received this testimony in Acts 10:38 ”How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him”. God loves his ultimate creation, man. And he shows his love by the words and acts that Jesus did: ”Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father… The words I say to you, I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work.” (John 14:9b, 10b). Before Jesus came and did the work of God, God could not express himself to his creature the way he wanted to. Since Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever, He will always act according to his Father's will against the people who come to him. 6. His love was a wonder The love that Jesus had for His Father and for us humans is greater than all other love displayed. His love was so great that He died for us, so that our sins would be forgiven through his sacrifice. By laying down his life, we could receive forgiveness and serve the living God. “How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who trough the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God!” (Hebrews 9:14). “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” (John 15:13). 7. His death was a wonder “With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last. The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. And when the centurion, who stood there in front of Jesus, saw how he died, he said, “Surely this man was the son of God!”” (Mark 15:37-39). The centurion had seen the life ebbing from many who had been crucified. When he saw how Jesus died, he confessed that Jesus was the Son of God. The cause of death for those who were crucified was choking. The soldiers would break their legs, making then unable to uphold their body and get enough oxygen. Eventually they would die by choking. When Jesus died, He cried out with a loud voice, and gave up the spirit. For the first and only time in human history the centurion witnessed a man who died at his own command. Some time before He died, Jesus said to his disciples: “The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life-only to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father.” (John 10:17-18). 8. His resurrection was a wonder When a man is dead, he has no opportunity to take part in life on earth again. “For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing; they have no further reward, and even their name is forgotten. Their love, their hate and their jealousy have long since vanished; never again will they have a part in anything that happens under the sun.” (Ecclesiastes 9:5-6). When life is over, all men will be responsible for the life they lived on earth. It is our lot to die one day, and then face God's judgment. Jesus did not die for himself. He died as a substitute for me and you, and therefore death had no hold on him: “But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him.” (Acts 2:24). Death had no power over Jesus, and it has no power over those who believe in Jesus: “Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?” (John 11:25-26). 9. His departure was a wonder Just like Jesus’ entrance to earth was a wonder, so was his return to heaven. “After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, he was taken up into heaven and he sat at the right hand of God.“ (Mark 16:19). Jesus Christ has no beginning or end. He has always been, and He will rule over creation with justice forever. For a short time he went out of eternity to do his Father's will here on earth. When he had finished his colossal sacrifice, his Father took him back into heaven. “Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess.” (Hebrews 4:14). 10. His return will be a wonder When the time comes, Jesus Christ will come back just like he was raptured: “This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.” (Acts 1:11b). When he came the first time, only a few people saw him, some shepherds and the three wise men. When he returns every eye will see him: “For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done.” (Matthew 16:27). This will be the biggest event that mankind will witness. Every knee shall bow and confess that Jesus is Lord! Jesus Christ is Wonderful! |
